The Martis people are considered the ancestors of the Washo tribe, who lived in the area more recently.

Martis Valley, with its unique climate and geography, was an ideal location for these early peoples—while it can get bitterly cold with bouts of “frozen fog,” the snowfall is considerably less than the other regions in Tahoe.
